A Study on the Factors of Menopause and Menopausal Symptoms


Abstract
This study was done to evaluate the factors which influence natural menopause and menopausal symptoms.
As the sample, 522 married house wives in the 45-60 year age group living in the Daejeon who were all in postmenopause were used. Questionaires filled up by medical personal interview during the period of July 1. 1978 to August 31. 1978, and following results were obtained;
1. The mean of menopausal age was 48. 3 years and that of reprodutive period was 31.6 years.
2. The duration of menstrual irregularity prior to menopause was less than 1 year in 49.8%, and most(77.8) within 3 years.
3. Higher level, and greater parity tended to experience menopause a little later, whereas no significant relationship was found between the age of menopause and manarche, first delivery or Last delivery.
4. The relation between menopause and contraceptive method: the women using IUD showed ealier menopause than women who never used any type of contraceptive.
5. There were 380(72.8%) cases who experienced perimenopausal symtoms, and these¡þsymtoms were general weakness (53,2%), arthralgia(50. 1%), and headache(33. 7%).
Those symptoms were mild in 66.3%, severe but tolerable in 24,9% and severe enough to seek medical treatment in 8.8%.
